Marge Winski (Montauk Point Lighthouse), St. George neighbor and former Lighthouse Keeper from 1987 to 2018 offers a rare insider look into managing Long Island's iconic tower.
Roberta Carmichael (Whitehead Island & Marshall Point), widow of Coast Guard Lighthouse Keeper Lewis Carmichael shared moving stories about the unique triumphs and trials of family life at a station.
THE CORA F. CRESSY
On August 20, 2026, the St. George Historical Society was proud to host Steve Cartwright who brought us the history of The Cora F. Cressy, a five masted 273 foot wooden-hulled freight schooner operating in the coasting trade along the east coast of the United States. Built in 1902 at the Percy and Small Shipyard (now the campus of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine), it served in that trade until 1928 and was at one time under the command of Ellis Haskell of Tenants Harbor.

On June 18, 2026, the St. George Historical Society was proud to host Jim Balano who talked about his family’s long history in Port Clyde and beyond, while sharing his family’s stories.
WOMEN OF ST. GEORGE
The St. George Historical Society honored the life and legacy of Eliza Jane Steele during our program on May 21, 2026.We learned about Eliza Jane Steele who was a woman whose life of service touched countless lives. A proud St. George native and the founding nurse of the Rockland District Nursing Association.
Peta vanVuuren, St. George resident and Executive Director of RDNA, along with two distinguished guests who knew and worked alongside Eliza Steele shared a video tribute and stories.
A Tribute to Eliza Steele, presented May 21, 2026
For 40 years, she led the RDNA, traveling door to door to care for the health needs of residents throughout Rockland and surrounding communities.
