Interior is set up to resemble a one-room schoolhouse
Our Schoolhouse Museum is located on School Street in the Town Office parking lot. If you'd like to visit by appointment, please send an email to stgeorgemainehistory@gmail.com.
This presentation takes a look back at the remarkable network of one-room schoolhouses that once dotted the town of St. George — from coastal islands to inland crossroads. At its peak in 1882, St. George had over 1,000 students enrolled, spread across roughly 19 school districts by 1883, plus scholars at Seal Harbor and on the islands. Some districts had their own buildings; others made do with rented space or private homes.
Through historic photographs, town reports, and local records, we'll trace the stories of these schools — how they were built, how they served their communities, and, one by one, how they closed as the town consolidated into a single elementary school. It's a window into everyday life in coastal Maine over a century and a half.
